Civil Access to Justice: The Future of Access to Justice
America faces a deep, urgent, and persistent crisis in access to civil justice. For decades, familiar approaches have fallen far short of meeting the scale and complexity of people’s justice needs. A different future requires justice that is people-centered, evidence-based, outcome-focused, and grounded in the democratic principle that justice belongs to everyone. Sandefur will share highlights from empirical research on how people experience and resolve civil justice problems and what it will take to meet their needs more effectively, including emerging solutions such as efforts to expand and diversify the justice workforce. This work offers a vision for building a more accessible, effective, and democratic system of justice.
