Dedicated Funds

Dedicated and Honorary Funds

The Connecticut Bar Foundation James W. Cooper Fellows have created the following funds to honor colleages that have made significant contributions to the practice of law in our state and to direct resources to meet specific unmet needs of our state's most vulnerable citizens.

Connecticut Innocence Fund

The Connecticut Innocence Fund was created to assist exonerees who have been recently released from prison based on proof of actual innocence of the crimes for which they were imprisoned. This is a tax-deductible fund to provide monetary advances to assist newly released exonerees with immediate financial needs prior to awards of compensation from the State of Connecticut. The advances are loans which are repaid out of the exonerees’ compensation awards to replenish the fund. Anthony M. Fitzgerald Award for Excellence Fund

The partners of Carmody Torrance Sandak & Hennessey LLP established the Anthony M. Fitzgerald Fund (Fund) for Excellence to honor Tony Fitzgerald on the occasion of his retirement from the practice of law.  Tony was a “lawyer’s lawyer.”  He trained a generation of Carmody lawyers and earned the respect and admiration of his clients and colleagues. Tony was a long-time supporter of the Connecticut Bar Foundation (CBF) and was a Charter James W. Cooper Fellow.  Carmody lawyers and staff, friends and others made the initial contributions to the Fund and proceeds were donated to the CBF to establish The Anthony M. Fitzgerald Award for Excellence. The Award recognizes excellence in advocacy, a hallmark of Tony’s career.  The CBF will present the award annually.  In addition to being recognized, recipients will receive a cash award. Follow the link above to learn more about this fund.

The David A. Pels Homelessness Prevention Fund

The David A. Pels Homelessness Prevention Fund was established in June of 2019 to benefit low-income tenants facing the threat of homelessness in Connecticut. The Fund was founded by attorneys at Greater Hartford Legal Aid, Inc. to honor the exemplary career and contributions of Attorney David A. Pels, one of the pioneers of landlord-tenant law in Connecticut. For over 45 years, David represented tens of thousands of low-income tenants facing the threat of homelessness, advancing tenants’ rights through creative and tenacious litigation and advocacy. Grants from the Fund may be made to assist low-income tenants individually (e.g., through emergency rental payments to prevent an eviction or subsidy termination) or to support advocacy on behalf of low-income tenants in Connecticut by non-profit organizations. To best achieve the purpose of the Fund, the eligibility criteria, application process, and grant-making decisions are made by the Fund Committee, with David, his wife Laura, and Peter Arakas serving as the inaugural co-chairs. Follow the link above to learn more about this fund.
