The 2013-2014 topic was “Food Fight” and was chosen for its special relevance to students of high school age. Students were asked to assume the role of a counsel for the Department of Education who is asked by the Department Commissioner to prepare an analysis of the proposed plan to restrict school menus and to ban certain foods brought to school by students. Students were to prepare a paper, not to exceed 1000 words, analyzing the arguments in favor of and against the district’s proposed plan and include an opinion as to whether the Department of Education should recommend the plan be implemented.

The contest winner received $2,000 and the two runners-up received $1,000. The winning students, school contest coordinators, and principals received award plaques which were presented at a ceremony presided over by Connecticut Supreme Court Justices at the Connecticut Supreme Court on June 3, 2014.
